This thesis contains the details and results of experiments performed on the diatomic molecules carbon monoxide and iodine by monitoring the vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence produced following two-photon laser excitations.;Experiments on carbon monoxide were performed in an attempt to measure the electric dipole moment of the A ;Iodine is one of the most extensively studied molecules in the visible and ultraviolet energy ranges. Interest continues into the vacuum ultraviolet range in order to explain the excited electronic structure of the molecule, particularly the characterization of the Rydberg states. In order to gain information on the gerade Rydberg states, which are transitionally forbidden from the ground state, two-photon excitations from the ground state are employed. Iodine was one of the first molecules to be studied by multiphoton ionization utilizing two-photon excitations, where several gerade Rydberg states have been observed. The experiments described in this thesis use vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence detection following two-photon excitations to observe gerade Rydberg levels. Eleven separate gerade Rydberg bands are identified and compared with the multiphoton ionization data. Close agreement exists for the bands observed by both techniques; however, each technique also produces features unique to themselves. The fluorescence experiments presented here also identify twenty-two atomic iodine transitions, providing information on the photodissociation of the iodine molecule.
