The propagation of electromagnetic waves into parallel-plate waveguides partially filled with special magnetoelectric or bianisotropic materials has been investigated. Three different waveguides are studied, waveguides structures I, II, and III.;Magnetoelectric material is made of atoms which possess both electric and magnetic dipole moments; it will be both polarized and magnetized when placed in a magnetic or an electric field. There are 58 magnetic point groups which possess the magnetoelectric effect. Also magnetoelectric effect can be induced in certain materials by externally applied electric or magnetic fields. The magnetoelectric materials can be reciprocal or nonreciprocal. Most of the emphases is focused on the nonreciprocal case because of its drastic effects on the propagation properties.;Transverse electric and magnetic modes are supported in certain magnetoelectric materials and certain geometry. The magnetoelectric materials of this problem support two wave numbers, or birefringence. These wave numbers are asymmetric ellipses.;Analytical expressions for some propagation properties such as cutoff frequencies, phase and group velocities are found for the waveguide of structure I. The characteristic equations for the waveguides of structures II, and III are found. They are transcendental equations which may be solved numerically or graphically. Each mode has two cutoff frequencies. At certain frequency band, the propagation is either forward or backward, while at other frequency band both forward and backward propagation is allowed.;An electromagnetic switch based on high values of the magnetoelectric effect is suggested.
