This thesis provides a narrative history of the Monterey Gazette, a newspaper published in Monterey, California from 1863 to 1869. It addresses the possible reasons for the Gazette's publication and its ability to survive for six years in an era when most newspapers lasted a year or less. Possible explanations for the Gazette's demise are also explored.;Analysis of all extant issues of the newspaper suggests that promotion of Monterey County and advocacy of the county's development were the main functions of the Gazette. Contents of the paper also suggest several secondary goals, including support of the Republican Party. Research points to an increase in Monterey's English-reading population, transportation and communications developments, and lack of local competition as contributors to the Gazette's longevity, while insufficient funds and the eventual publication of a competing newspaper contributed to its demise.
