Catalytic steam reforming of chlorinated hydrocarbons has been proposed as a valuable alternative to incineration for detoxification of chlorinated organic wastes. Previous work on chlorinated aliphatics including kinetic measurements and catalyst screening gave insight into reaction pathways, deactivation mechanism, operation conditions, and catalyst optimization. A small pilot unit was operated with 1,1,1-trichloroethane for 50 hours at high conversion with no deactivation.;In this work, the pilot unit was improved to demonstrate 99.999% destruction for major chlorinated solvents. An experimental unit was also built for reforming of heavy chloroaromatics such as, chlorobenzenes and polychlorinated biphenyls. Destruction efficiencies as high as 99.9% were obtained on nickel- and platinum-based catalysts.
