Sagwitch: Shoshoni chieftain, Mormon Elder, 1822-1884

This biographical study follows Chief Sagwitch through the major events of his life and assesses how the decisions he made in response to his changing world significantly affected his descendants and his people.;By the time the first Mormons arrived in 1847, Sagwitch was a chief among his people. He initially welcomed the Mormons, then came to resent their presence as limited food sources were strained even more. In 1863, Colonel Patrick Connor and the California Volunteers attacked Sagwitch's winter camp on the Bear River, massacring over three hundred men, women, and children. Sagwitch, although wounded, survived the massacre. His leadership was crucial in regrouping what remained of his people afterwards.;In 1873 Sagwitch embraced the Mormon religion and on a spring day in 1873 led his entire band into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). Sagwitch directed his people to settle at Washakie, a Mormon-sponsored community in Box Elder County, Utah. He exhibited stalwart dedication to his new religion, even helping to build a Mormon holy building, the Logan Temple. Sagwitch died in 1884. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
