A vibrationally enhanced membrane module was designed and constructed based on commercially proven planar speaker technology. The membrane vibrations improved the performance of the membrane module by enhancing flux. Membrane vibrations were initially confirmed in air using a pressure transducer coupled with the sealed membrane module. Average flux enhancement of 23% was observed for BSA separation when the system operated at the maximum frequency of 2000 Hz, the minimum cross flow of 0.35 l/min (7.5 cm/sec.), and the minimum trans-membrane pressure differential of 69 kPa. The permeation behavior of membranes in the module followed a common model often applied to membrane separation processes. This model can be used to approximate the flux of a membrane process at a point in time:
