Art history and intellectual history: Michael Baxandall's work between 1963 and 1985.

This dissertation deals ostensibly with three books and a few articles produced by Michael Baxandall between 1963 and 1985. In an attempt to examine certain issues of the history of art history during this period, I have used Baxandall's work as a case through which to both generate and discuss problems of method, theory, and epistemology.;One aim is to examine Baxandall's work to foreground the intellectual history of some of the methods he develops and to see how they may have related to contemporary debates within art history. An additional motive is to consider how these disciplinary debates might have prodded Baxandall into active engagement with them. Naturally, the relationship is dynamic and reciprocal, and I have tried to write that reciprocity into the study.;The dissertation includes transcripts of two interviews with Michael Baxandall conducted in early February of 1994, in which he responds to several questions about his education, his work, and his relationships--both intellectual and personal--with several other scholars.;The period in question was one of interesting developments in the discipline, including the rise of Marxism and the social history of art, and the borrowing of theories and methods from disciplines such as literature, linguistics, anthropology, and sociology.
