New teachers perform an essential role in bringing restructured educational concepts and practices, including student-centered learning, to American schools. An intensive and holistic preservice teacher orientation program, FRESH START, utilizes engaging methodologies to wean preservice teachers from institution-centered educational models and to actively introduce and involve them in a variety of restructured educational practices. Utilizing published literature and personal experience, the author explores fresh approaches to teaching and learning as alternatives to stagnant current practices.
