Baroque ornamentation practices applied to transcriptions for the modern brass quintet using selected compositions of Johann Pezel and Samuel Scheidt.
The modern brass quintet often performs transcriptions of late Renaissance and Baroque music. These performances many times include ornamentation. Players must have a working knowledge of the performance practice pertaining to appropriate ornamentation in order to include proper embellishments in performance. This study is designed to provide a tool for a musician, specifically in the brass quintet, to begin the process of using acceptable ornamentation in live performance. Chapter One contains general information about the cornetto and natural trumpet, as well as brief historical information on Johann Pezel and Sonata 3 and Sonata 22, and Samuel Scheidt and Galliard Battalia and Canzona Bergamasca. An overview of Baroque ornamentation follows in Chapter Two, including notated examples and some discussion of performance practice, with reference to the art of spontaneous ornamentation. Chapter three contains ten personal interviews with internationally recognized artists who perform Baroque ornamentation in various capacities. They are Bruce Barrie, Leonard Candelaria, Allan Dean, Ralph Dudgeon, David Hickman, Keith Johnson, Jeff Luke, Jeff Nussbaum, Wiff Rudd, and Edward Tarr. Suggested recordings and research materials from each artist is collated at the end of this chapter. Chapter Four contains the four transcriptions for brass quintet with alternative ornamentation supplied in the written parts. Each ornament is referenced to allow a student to refer to the general rules and categories of ornaments that were common in the late Renaissance and Baroque periods.
