Ch'usa Kim Chong-Hui (1786-1857): The development of Chusach'e (the style of Ch'usa) through the Chinese Metal and Stone Movement.

摘要

Ch'usa Kim Chong-hui (1786-1857) is a well-known Korean scholar-artist whose unique calligraphy style is often described as "Cholpak ch'ong'go" or "honest and highly elegant style." He, however, acquired his own sensibility and taste in calligraphy through his diligent study of the Chinese Metal and Stone Movement.;Kim chose empirical and evidential studies as a means to examine and interpret the history of Chinese calligraphy. By presenting and examining the calligraphic theories and works of Kim, and Chinese calligraphers who influenced to him, Weng Fanggang (1733-1818), Ruan Yuan (1764-1849) and Deng Shiru (1743-1805), this thesis is intended to define the unique calligraphic world of Kim Chong-hui.;This is, in a sense, shows how the calligrapher, Kim Chong-hui, understood another world and integrated it into his own style of art. This is Kim's legacy to Korean art.
