The physical mechanism causing optical response of an optically thin high temperature superconductor (HTS) film has been investigated. However, the mechanism causing optical response of an optically thick film is still unclear. Initially, we performed a theoretical study and systematic experimental analysis of the optical response. We studied the dependence of the optical response (OR) of an HTS on the temperature, laser intensity, and current and also studied the variation in waveform and fall time.;We observed that the rise time is ;On the other hand, if the OR has both picosecond rise time and fall time, the HTS can be used to generate microwave harmonics or for optical control of microwaves. We have generated the 53rd harmonics and also down-converted a 2 GHz microwave signal to ;Finally, we propose a method to generate millimeter wave radiation by using an HTS. From the radiation pattern, the rise time of the optical response can be obtained.
