The new vernacular garden: An examination of self-expression in the residential landscape.

Throughout landscape architectural history, a primary research focus has been the aristocratic landscape garden--the gardens of society's elite members. Overlooked have been gardens created by individuals for their own use. These gardens, referred to as "vernacular" in recent studies, are defined as gardens specific to a particular place, time or people, which reference the cultural, social, and genealogical history of their makers (Hunt and Wolschke-Bulmahn, 1993). While all gardens imply special meanings for their owners, vernacular gardens in particular offer lasting proof of human experiences, expressed by unique elements highlighting certain traditions, styles, and feelings of their creators.;The historical vernacular garden has been classified as a garden of utilitarian-based origin. However, no longer a need-based entity, the garden is increasingly influenced by the material culture which has developed as a result of modern technology. This research explores a hybrid form of "new" vernacular garden--one which marries historical, folk-based influences with the contributions of today's popular culture. These vernacular gardens are important indicators of personalities and lifestyles; of feelings, motivations, ideas and dreams. This research examines further the history of vernacular gardens, both the "folk" and the "popular", to expand the body of knowledge on this topic. Vernacular landscape architecture has been heralded by many landscape architects as a valuable tool for learning more about landscape design.
