A balance between pedestrian and vehicular movement in relation to street configuration.

The pattern of urban development in post-war American cities is sufficiently different from its predecessors to warrant serious attention within the fields of architecture, urban design, and city planning. Analysis of three case studies in Atlanta, Georgia, indicates not only that substantive changes in urban morphologies can be tracked over time, but that configuration of street patterns has been the primary indicator of this change. Within the three case study areas, a synchronic analysis of the relationship between the balance of pedestrian and vehicular movement, and changes in street configuration will be conducted. This analysis will proceed using both syntactic and metric variables in an attempt to understand better the role of street configuration in relation to traffic movement, connectivity, and integration as well as potentially increase our understanding of "post-diction" within syntactical structures. The result of the analysis allows us to recognize the most critical issues associated with a contemporary urban development so that any attempt at intervention into the spatial configuration will be analyzed based on its configurational relationship to the larger urban system. This thesis aims to analyze and describe the contemporary morphological structures in order to draw a normative theory of urban design.
