The discovery of high temperature superconductivity in copper oxides has invoked enormous research interest in narrow-band oxides. Layered nickel oxides having structural and electronic similarities to superconductive cuprates have drawn naturally much attention in recent years. This dissertation deals with layered nickel oxides containing Ni;The La;The internal stresses introduced by a bond length mismatch between the adjacent layers is found to play an important role in the crystal chemistry and properties of ;The Ni
