Knowledge of breast health and breast self-exam practices of nurses.

This study explored factors related to the frequency with which nurses perform breast self-examination (BSE). The effects of self-efficacy and relationships with health care providers (HCP) on BSE frequency also were examined.;Data were collected by means of self-report questionnaires that were distributed to nurses at a tertiary care center in the Pacific Northwest. Statistically significant relationships were found between performing BSE eight or more times a year and the following variables: high BSE self-efficacy, high perceived breast health knowledge, being taught BSE while a (HCP) performed the exam, being asked to perform a return demonstration of BSE, and a perception their HCP thought BSE was important. These results substantiate the importance of several factors identified in Pender's Health Promotion Model.
