The assessment of economic impact studies on sport-related events in North America: A content analysis.

In the last 200 years, methods for studying economic impact have been developed by researchers to offer definitive evidence of the economic changes which have taken place in a region or community.;The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of sport-related economic impact studies from 1975 to 1996. Twenty three studies were collected. The author developed a coding sheet by using economic impact related theories and content analysis research methods to review the contents of these 23 studies: basic information, study category, region, investigation time, data collection, impact study model, expenditures, impact, relation between expenditures and impact, leakage, and impact multiplier.;After reviewing these 23 studies, a 12-step (sport-related event economic impact) guideline was developed by the author for future research-selection of an event, time duration, impact region, development of an impact analysis framework, design of a data collection instrument, establish data collecting strategies; and identify subjects, expenditures, multiplier, impact, determine leakage, and identify pure economic impact.;Finally, the author suggested that sport-related event economic impact researchers pay more attention to detailed economic impact theories to avoid errors in their findings. Sport-related event economic impact results should be integrated with other impact studies (traffic, environment, and image impact). In addition, a sport-related event economic impact analysis model needs to be developed to show the uniqueness of a sport related event. In international comparison among sport-related event economic impact studies was also proposed by the author, especially for the officials of international sport governing bodies when they select ideal places for the staging of international sporting events.;Currently, modern economic impact research methods have been applied to discover the economic impact on a community which results from specific events in various economic sectors. These sectors include transportation, environment, construction, tourism, recreation, and other fields. Sport events provide additional opportunities to examine this phenomenon. However, as researchers have begun to study sport and economic impact, their research methods have varied considerably.
