This appears to be the first study to utilize the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the C.A.R.E. Profile instruments to examine the relationship between personality perception and innovation approach preferences among computer professionals. This study attempted to determine if the cognitive process of personality perception was a strong indicator of the natural creative process among computer professionals of a major telecommunication's firm. This study had two objectives. The first objective was to determine innovation approach preferences of computer professionals. The second objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the MBTI personality perception (Sensing or Intuition) and innovation approach preferences (Conceptual, Normative, Methodical and Spontaneous). This study also sought to differentiate creative thinking from creative behavior. The identification of common cognitive preferences and tendencies in creative thinking and behavior among computer professionals could serve as an indicator to determine potential for success in computer and information technology related professions. The results of these findings can be applied to education and training, career counseling, creative and occupational development, team-building, and communications. The MBTI was used to assess personality preferences and the Carlson Learning Company's C.A.R.E. Profile was used to assess creative preferences. Twenty-seven of the thirty-five computer professionals under one director volunteered to participate in this study and completed both instruments. This study utilized the Friedman test to determine innovation approach preferences and the Spearman rank correlation test to determine the relationship between personality perception and innovation approach preferences. The study found significant differences in innovation approach preferences among computer professionals at the.01 level. Also, a significant relationship at the.01 level of significance existed between personality perception and innovation approach preferences in terms of creative behavior. However, a significant relationship between personality perception and innovation approach preferences in terms of creative thinking at the.05 level was not found. This study provides illustrations and descriptions of theoretical models of the cognitive-creative process and personality perception impact on innovation approach. Examples are provided on the practical implications and applications of the results to enhance creative potential.
