A social ecological approach to organizational network analysis: The Manu Biosphere Reserve case study, Peru.

This research focuses on organizational network analysis, as it pertains to wildland management and indigenous populations, using a social ecological approach. This study is directed both toward more adequate theoretical formulation and toward issues of management application. The study examines the nature and type of opportunities and limitations affecting the institutional capacity of emergent organizational networks to manage biosphere reserves.; An organizational system of 19 organizations involved with the management of the Manu Biosphere Reserve, Peru, served as a subject of study. Major properties and structural characteristics of the emergent network are analyzed. It reveals factors affecting the effectiveness of the Manu Biosphere Reserve organizational system to develop an institutional capacity to manage the reserve, and also the consistency of management.; The theoretical basis for the study come from biological, social, cultural, and organizational ecology. As an interdisciplinary study, its results improve the emerging paradigm of organizational ecology, stressing an ecological perspective emphasizing cooperation. Its practical significance rests on shaping the future of conservation and development efforts in developing countries in a proactive way, deriving information and trends to improve management capacity.
