摘要

Ecotourism is an industry which has experienced rapid growth in recent years. As form of tourism which is based on natural environments, ecotourism is often focused on parks and protected areas. While ecotourism has the potential to promote conservation and generate revenues, without careful management it can produce many of the same impacts associated with traditional tourism. In Atlantic Canada, ecotourism has been increasingly promoted although there is a lack of comprehensive research upon which to base management and policy decisions.;Through a survey of nature tour organizations this study examined the composition and nature of the ecotourism industry in Atlantic Canada in order to provide information which is currently lacking. This information was used to evaluate the potential of ecotourism for national parks in Atlantic Canada and to develop a framework to assess the compatibility of ecotourism with the objectives of nationally protected areas.;Results of this study indicated that tour organizations in region have an understanding of ecotourism, and attempted to incorporate ecotourism principles in their operations. Organizations recognized the importance of environmental integrity and thus, have potential to act as environmental stewards. However, the ability of organizations to translate commendable environmental ideals into compatible practices in the field was questionable. Recommendations were proposed to address concerns and focused on developing means to facilitate implementation of ecotourism principles.
