The performances of J. S. Bach's music in the Hong Kong Arts Festival: A case study of Bach reception in Hong Kong.

摘要

Hong Kong is one of the most internationally renowned and well-developed business centers of the world today. It is a meeting place of West and East. Western classical music was probably first brought to Hong Kong during the 1840s by the British. J. S. Bach is the most popular Baroque composer in Hong Kong. How did his music first get established in Hong Kong? How did the people in Hong Kong who played Bach and listened to Bach's works understand and appreciate the composer's music? Does Bach reception in Hong Kong differ from that in Western countries? And is so why if there is a difference? This study will address these questions with the goal of appraising the unique mode of Bach reception in Hong Kong.;Bach reception in Hong Kong is very different from that in Western countries. In Hong Kong, audiences do not seem to have a deep understanding of his life and music. Until the present study, no academic research has been conducted on Bach in this city.
