摘要

This thesis contains the results of analysis of open pit mine slope stability, using both Limit Equilibrium and numerical methods of analysis. The aim was to evaluate the suitability of each method for specific situations of analysis, using case examples of actual mine problems. Two case examples were used, both from an iron ore mine in southeast Brazil, the Aguas Claras Mine.;The results have demonstrated that Limit Equilibrium methods are a valuable tool in the preliminary analysis of slope stability. The methods can be used with relative success either in modelling events in retrospect or in design of future situations. The major drawback of these methods rests with assumptions made to overcome their inherent indeterminacy. In this context, numerical analyses should supplement Limit Equilibrium methods. Numerical analyses are particularly useful in back-analysis type problems, for they permit the evaluation of stresses and strains present at the time of failure and consequently a better estimate of the strength mobilized. The capability of incorporating non-linear behaviour for the rock masses being evaluated is one of the main strengths of the methods. This feature allows the slope designer to appraise the likely behaviour of the slope upon the proposed modifications, assessing deformations and possibility of failures. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
