A holistic approach to handwriting psychology is used in an attempt to broaden the scope of the field beyond popular notions of graphology or handwriting analysis. Emphasis is placed on the inseparability of content from graphic product in the study of handwriting as a characteristic human process. An overview is presented of the development of writing, handwriting pedagogy, environmental factors affecting handwriting, and graphological research. Three interrelated aspects of handwriting are discussed in some detail: purpose, process, and product. A model of human nature is suggested based on inferences made from the human capacity to write and read. An empirical study of handwriting in suicides is included as an appendix.
