Forty stands on various soils and topographic positions within the Winn and Catahoula Ranger Districts were sampled in the summer of 1996. Vegetative data collected from each stand were subjected to Two-way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN) and Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). Eight community types were classified and described along a slope position gradient, ranging from major and minor river floodplains to various upland sites such as longleaf pine savannas and calcareous prairies. Five common ordination methods (including DCA) were also compared using a soil-topography model derived from the soil and physiography data from the 40 stands. DCA and, to a lesser extent Reciprocal Averaging (RA), arranged the stands most consistently with the soil-topography model.
