Online journalism: How newspapers tell stories on the Internet.

To save their slipping readership and perhaps to attract new audiences, many newspapers have launched a Web site. While some, due to the lack of resources or incentives, stay with the so-called "shovelware" format, which is the direct transfer of information from the print to the online edition, others seek to break new ground.; This study focuses on the pioneering online newspapers that are experimenting with different reporting styles for the Internet. Responses from more than one hundred online editors, producers and writers across the country showed a gradual change in writing styles online. The study also reveals the use of nonlinear storytelling--an Internet-specific storytelling technique--in complex stories. And last, some online newspapers have distinguished themselves by publishing original content not appearing in the print edition, pushing online journalism further away from the shovelware format.
