Cultural Brokering Between Emerging Latino Adults and their Mexican Immigrant Parents: A Multiple Case Study.

Cultural brokers' ability to translate and interpret language and cultural information to their immigrant families allows them to be intermediaries between two worlds. Brokering has been found to be an everyday process that many children and adolescents from immigrant families experience; however, its impact has rarely focused on the experiences of emerging Latino adult (18-25 years) brokers and their parents. Therefore, the purpose of this in-depth multiple qualitative case study is to understand how cultural brokering is experienced in this population. Six two-parent Mexican immigrant families with an identified broker will participate in this study. Parents and brokers will be interviewed separately in their preferred language. The data will be analyzed case by case through thematic analysis followed by a cross-case analysis. Themes will be extracted from all cases. The findings will be used to understand the implications that brokering experiences have on Mexican immigrant families in the context of emerging Latino adult brokers, so as to be able to garner a greater understanding of the benefits and drawbacks associated with the immigrant families' continual need for brokering.
