Career aspirations: A study of superintendent certificate holders in Washington State in 1997.

This study was done to provide information on the career aspirations of superintendent certificate holders in the State of Washington. A survey was sent to individuals who held a superintendent certificate but not employed as a superintendent in 1997.;The survey sought data concerning the personal demographics and professional background of superintendent certificate holders and the factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic, that contribute or constrain the individual from applying or not applying for the superintendency. The study was viewed in terms of gender and region.;The majority of respondents were male and resided in western Washington. The average age was 50 years. Most earned incomes of over ;The majority of the respondents in the study do not desire to apply for the position of superintendent. Those that plan to apply for the superintendency are motivated by intrinsic factors such as Leadership Opportunity, Mental Challenge, and Implementation of Reform and plan to apply in the school year, 1999--2000. Those not planning to apply for the superintendency are motivated by extrinsic factors such as Enjoyment of Current Position, Spouse's Job, and Place-bound .;The researcher suggested a modified feedback loop as part of the analytical framework.
