Effects of welding on the metallurgy of electropolished 316L stainless steel.

In this study, electropolished 316L stainless steel specimens from various heat lots were welded under identical parameters, but with varying concentrations of oxygen leaked into the purge gas during the welding (0 ppm, 1.2 ppm, 6.3 ppm, and 31.6 ppm). Discoloration in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) was determined to be proportional to the oxygen concentration and to be composed of an iron enriched oxide layer. The color and thickness of the oxide layer depended upon the concentration of oxygen available in the purge gas. The composition of the original steel was found to be only a minor factor in the extent of the discoloration. Consequent corrosion studies in a 3.5% NaCl solution showed the HAZ to be slightly more susceptible to corrosion regardless of the extent of discoloration. No evidence of carbide precipitation in the grain boundaries was observed in the HAZ.
