icrostructural features in rapidly solidified Fe-16Ni-9Cr-N and type 316 stainless steels have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM), and atom-probe field ion microscopy (APFIM). An attempt to correlate the observed microstructures with the mechanical properties has also been made in this study.;In rapid solidified Fe-16Ni-9Cr-N, stable and fine microstructural features are observed even after 1-hour heat treatments at 1300;In RSP type 316 stainless steels, 2 nm-diameter cavities are observed in the unaged specimen. Similar to the R2 specimen, oxygen is also introduced intentionally to this RSP 316 SS. As a result, oxygen seems to be an important factor for the formation and stabilization of cavities.
