Correlating turbulent boundary layer heat transfer in the presence of free-stream turbulence

This thesis addresses the correlation of wall heat flux to measured parameters for single-phase boundary layer flows with highly turbulent free-streams. Heat transfer data from seven experimental studies are examined.;Four different Reynolds-Analogy-based models are shown to follow a common form. Cast in this form, the data show no deterministic variation with turbulence intensity. This result implies no systematic breakdown exists in the relationship between heat transfer and skin friction due to elevated free-stream turbulence.;A modification to a Stanton number correlation based on a near-wall fluctuating velocity allows the inclusion of a turbulence length scale. Using this modified near-wall relationship, a Stanton number predictor is produced. The new correlation is similar in form and performance to Ames' TLR parameter. The similar performance between the Reynolds-Analogy-based models, TLR and the new correlation implies that a limit on the n th, order measurement uncertainty for these data sets has been achieved.
