Are organizations ready to migrate to object-oriented software development? An exploration of critical success factors of object-oriented technology adoption.

The internet has changed everything. In today's business climate of fierce competition, many companies are using information technology via the internet to differentiate themselves from their competition. Business information systems, developed and deployed with object-oriented technology (OOT), can help companies achieve strategic advantage by allowing them to develop and deploy systems quicker. However, sixty percent of companies fail in using OOT.; This research identifies a list of factors critical to success in migration to OOT and implementing OOT. The list was derived from previous research, case studies, and field survey.; Three hundred computer executives at companies based in the central United States were surveyed about their companies' background with technology, usage of OOT, and success with OOT. Factor analysis was used to identify which of the thirty factors identified from previous research and case study were appropriate for this study.; Discriminant analysis was used to compare companies that have used OOT with those that have not. Differentiating factors are (1) Absorption of trend technology, (2) Architectural support, (3) Company's planning for and exploitation of new technology, (4) Force, acceptance, infrastructure for change, and (5) Prior system implementation success with trend technology and application software development maturity. The companies that had used OOT were analyzed to identify which factors may have determined their success with OOT. The factors identified were (1) Company's planning for and exploitation of new technology, (2) Prior implementation success with trend technology and application development maturity, and (3) Force, acceptance, and infrastructure for change.
