Study of H-Bonded Duplexes Containing L-Phe Residues.

Information-encoded molecular duplexes have been developed and studied by the Gong group for over 15 years. These duplexes have been found to exhibit tunable binding strength and programmable hydrogen bonding sequences; however, the duplexes developed thus far lack the ability to cyclize. This has led the group to the development of oligoamides strands that contain phenylalanine residues to render the oligoamide backbone curved. Once the synthesized curved oligoamides have been cyclized, cyclic duplexes similar to beta-barrels found in nature will be the result.;Duplexes and their DNA mimetic functions along with the development and utilization of beta-peptides will be discussed in Chapter 1. The unification of these concepts has helped the conception of our current research as well as the future development of the project into beta-barrel like structures.;The synthetic pathways developed for these oligoamides, along with our findings are discussed in Chapter 2, including the reasoning for the structural modifications. All experimental procedures including NMR characterization are listed in Chapter 3.
