As a region of the United States, Appalachia presents a story that is both compelling and cautious. Exploitation of the region's extractive economy and its people has caused great degradation to the land and to the unique culture of people who reside within Appalachia's borders. The Central Appalachian subregion is of unique concern, with some of the highest rates of poverty and joblessness in the United States. However, the rich culture of the area continues to shape a unique and special society that will require leadership unlike any other time in the region's history if it is to survive and if its people are to thrive in the twenty-first century and beyond. A review of the work of James Davison Hunter and others calls out a type of leader unseen in both the sacred and secular spheres, one with the possibility of leading change in the culture in ways that are lasting and meaningful. A synthesis of Hunter's collected writings, Appalachian culture, global sociological issues, and leadership theory will be employed to arrive at an assertion that this type of leader will employ neocharismatic leadership qualities and will be known as a leader of faithful presence, a premise which was introduced in Hunter's 2010 work, To Change the World..
