he differences between the vocalizations of captive and wild White-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar) and the effects of playbacks on captive White-handed gibbons were investigated. The vocalizations of 2 pairs of White-handed gibbons were recorded using a DAT and analyzed quantitatively and through spectrograms. The behavioural and vocal effects of playbacks on the captive gibbons were evaluated. The results indicated that captivity was not a determinant for vocal behaviour in captive gibbons and that playbacks increased activity
