Analysis of the effectiveness of communication and information sharing in virtual project organizations.

Organizations have evolved from conventional to virtual organizations having project members working together from a distance. Through the use of technologies, the virtual organization members maintain shared goals and exchange information and knowledge in order to carry out project tasks. Unlike a traditional organization, there is no particular organizational structure previously created for a virtual organization.; This research attempts to compare the communication and information sharing practices between a traditional and a virtual organization, investigate the relationships between the communication and information sharing processes and the project outcomes, and examine the relationships between task and organization types and communication and information sharing processes. Project outcomes include the perception of project success, satisfaction, and quality of communication and information. The research model is developed using IDEF0 method. A set of questionnaires is created and distributed to the research samples. Multiple regression and correlation analyses are performed to test the model.; It is found that communication and information sharing processes in a virtual organization have positive and negative influences on the project success and satisfaction of project members. The communication and information sharing processes affect the perceived quality of project communication and information. In a virtual organization, the types of tasks and organizations that participate in the project are related to how communication and information sharing are carried out. The results confirm that the practices of communication and information sharing are different between a virtual organization and a traditional organization. The management of organization, communication, and information sharing therefore should be different.
