This doctoral project seeks to give biblical communicators a greater understanding of how the use of physical objects in preaching can help their hearers apply the truth of God's Word to life. A careful study of the Scriptures reveals how thoroughly and consistently God uses concrete physical objects and images to convey abstract spiritual truth. The appropriate secular and Christian literature on learning theory, brain research, and the impact of technology encourages the use of physical objects in a learning context. This research project was conducted at a local church in which 85 participants responded to questionnaires and in focus groups concerning the use of four different physical objects in four sermons over four weeks. The project revealed consistent results in both genders and all ages that the use of physical objects in a preaching context was helpful in encouraging hearers to remember, understand, and apply biblical truth better.
