An Etruscan Hellenistic workshop: The kiln and artisans' zone at Cetamura del Chianti.

This dissertation focuses on a recently discovered Etruscan ceramic kiln at Cetamura del Chianti, Italy, comparing and contrasting it to the other known Etruscan kilns, in terms of architecture, construction materials, configuration, function, operation, contents, and context within the site. Nearly thirty Etruscan kilns are known but to date none has been fully published with proper scientific documentation. The kiln at Cetamura has been carefully excavated and recorded by an archaeological team from Florida State University with thorough documentation. This dissertation can thus make a significant contribution to the existing knowledge of Etruscan industry, art, and architecture.; The dissertation is organized into four chapters. The first offers a general introduction to ancient kilns including information about architecture and materials. The second provides an updated inventory of Etruscan kilns that have been identified and described throughout Etruria. Information includes the location of the kilns, their relationship to the ancient habitations, the nature of their construction, and the materials used to build them. The third chapter provides a thorough description of the kiln at Cetamura, and the fourth describes the architecture of the kiln and relates it to its physical and chronological context within Cetamura's artisans' zone.
