Analysis of land falling hurricanes in the North Atlantic Basin and their relationship to 700 mb circulation of the Subtropical High, 1948--1999.

This study analyzed land falling hurricanes in the North Atlantic basin during the years of 1948--1999 in order to determine if a relationship exists between the 700mb circulation of the Subtropical High and Atlantic ocean hurricanes that make landfall along the United States east coast region. Hurricane data utilized for this study include maps of all North Atlantic hurricanes and 700mb height and location data.; This study found that strength and frequency of hurricanes is related to the position and strength of the 700mb Subtropical High. Specifically, a northeastward shift of the High is typically followed by an increase in hurricane activity and strength. This study also found that the maximum strength of a hurricane could be roughly forecasted by the location at which the storm was classified as a "tropical storm". It is hoped these findings will aid in better forecasting of these destructive storms.
