摘要

Odor from large-scale swine production facilities is a controversial issue in the United States today. Swine producers are constantly fighting public disapproval, governmental restrictions, and legal battles over the emission of malodor from their facilities. With this controversy threatening the swine industry, the need for an efficient and cost effective odor control technology is critical. Recent research has shown that biofiltration may be a viable technology for the treatment and reduction of odors associated with large-scale livestock production. In this study, a bench-scale biofiltration system was designed, built, and tested to determine its applicability as an odor control technology for the swine industry. The research conclusions show that biofiltration was effective in reducing some odors associated with swine production. Therefore, biofiltration holds promise as a feasible technology that is suitable for application in the swine industry.
