An ongoing investigation has identified a problem with the flight control surfaces on the CF188 Hornet aircraft in that they suffer from water ingress into the composite layers and the aluminium honeycomb core causing hydration and water entrapment, respectively. Neutron radiography is being used to indicate the presence of water in these components. As a faster alternative, neutron radioscopy, which is the combination of charged coupled device (CCD) or analogue camera technology with a neutron source to produce a digital image on a personal computer, has been investigated.; A methodical and intensive study was conducted to determine the CCD camera's characteristics and response to the elimination of light leaks, changes to camera temperature, varying exposure time, different diffuser characteristics and variable neutron flux levels. Testing was done at different neutron fluxes which further validated the response of the camera system. Further testing of the system was carried out to confirm its ability to detect water in a honeycomb test piece. Final testing required imaging a CF188 rudder with known water ingress to determine the camera's ability to image the presence of water in a realistic situation. Finally, a cost comparison between neutron radiography and neutron radioscopy was made. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
