The job market is a complex environment subject to pervasive, rapid change. Career success depends on quality career planning. Since career planning requires the kind of detailed self-assessment and environmental analysis used for constructing marketing plans and professionals can be viewed as marketing their skills, the marketing paradigm is applicable to organizing career planning efforts.; The informational requirements of marketing planning are significant and can lead to information overload. Information technology is the only reasonable hope of processing such large quantities of information. Some steps in the process are ideal candidates for the application of intelligent systems techniques. A frame-based knowledge base containing detailed information about professionals and professional positions combined with advanced search techniques provides an effective and efficient means of evaluating available occupational information.; Under current conditions, no individual can reasonably expect to exercise genuine, long-term strategic control over their career without the support of knowledge-driven information technologies.
