This study was designed to analyze and compare methods used to transfer research technology in sustainable agriculture to producers, versus the ways that producers would prefer to obtain that information. Projects associated with the western region of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program were used for this study.;Data collected through interviews with both principal investigators and agricultural producers revealed that generally principal investigators prefer to transfer information generated from research, to producers by means of workshops and periodicals. Agricultural producers, on the other hand, prefer to receive that information through hands-on, participatory means. Dialog with other producers, in connection with field demonstrations, was the means most often specified by farmers as a way to pull together ideas from research. In addition, they prefer to investigate literature pertaining to new production practices through periodicals, then participate in workshops or meetings, and finally have access to research results for further consideration.
