Mitigating factors of historic preservation: Change, patriotism, economics, and socio-cultural status in Placentia, California.

Historic preservation, especially at the local level, is subject to many conflicting agendas. This situation makes preservation a contentious issue for communities, whose constituent groups hold very divergent ideas of heritage and its preservation. Factors such as economics, environmental change, patriotism, and social ethnic status are some of the salient determinates that enter into historic preservation decisions, and this thesis illustrates how these particular factors affect historic preservation in Placentia, California. Placentia is an interesting and instructive case study. In many ways it is a quintessentially southern California suburban community, also, like many surrounding cities, it is currently undergoing a process of historical awareness. This has meant that Placentia has had to make decisions at the city-level as well as within the community about where historic preservation fits into its municipal priorities. Utilizing methodology and models of traditional history as well as those of public history, this thesis analyzes both Placentia's past history and present historic preservation issues.
