The objective of this research program was to investigate the potential for using system identification as a nondestructive evaluation technique to assess structural damage. In addition, the use of system identification was used to examine the effectiveness of several current computer modeling procedures. This specific project examined the feasibility of producing a system identification for a large, multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structure in the form of a nine-span bridge. The ability to conduct a system identification of a structure is the essential first step toward utilizing system identification as a nondestructive evaluation technique and as a computer modeling aid.;In this case study five of the lower response modes and their frequencies for the nine-span bridge were found, indicating that system identification of a large structural system is possible. The five lower response modes were also used to compare with various computer models and illustrate some of the challenges that engineers face when generating computer models.
