Several strategies for the construction of new coordination frameworks that target in particular the formation of silicate mineral analogs are presented. Their implementation has resulted in a variety of different materials whose synthesis and characterization will be discussed.; These will be divided into two major sections. The first will focus on three basic structure types: discrete, one-dimensional, and three-dimensional extended frameworks. In the case of the discrete frameworks particular importance is placed on their hosting ability which is dominated by either hydrogen bonding or pi-stacking interactions. The one-dimensional frameworks particularly emphasize the crucial role played by the anions and solvents used to synthesize these materials. In addition they highlight the variability in copper(I) geometry in these networks. Extended three-dimensional frameworks synthesized via the use of different anions emphasize their ability to template the formation of distinct materials.; The second major area that is focused on is the construction of materials that have structural similarity to clay minerals. Using a simple building-block approach numerous structures with square, pentagonal, and hexagonal cavities have been made. These result from variations in the solvent, anion, and ligands used.; The ultimate aim is to illustrate some basic design principles and the results of their application, in the hopes of furthering the effort of rationally designing solid-state materials.
