The importance of new knowledge to organizational growth has led to a growing research interest in understanding what influences the creation of new knowledge. This study examines two critical components of the knowledge creation process: (1) knowledge-based resources, and (2) organizational routines that direct the integration and renewal of the specialized knowledge of knowledge-based resources. The following question is addressed: What are the relationships between the amount and value of new knowledge and (1) knowledge-based resources and (2) organizational routines?; This study is rooted in evolutionary theory and the resource-based view of the firm due to the evolutionary nature and importance of knowledge resources to the creation of knowledge. First, this study examines key individuals of an organization as knowledge-based resources. Particular attention is paid to the specialized knowledge stocks of the individuals. Second, organizational routines that have the potential to facilitate the knowledge creation process are identified.; This study extends previous research on the resource-based view by creating an endogenous model of the knowledge creation process that attempts to identify and measure resources that impact the process. The sample for this study was comprised of research units in the medical research industry. This industry was chosen due to its intense knowledge creation activities. The research units in the sample include both private and public medical research institutions. The study examines both individual and organizational level competencies. Data was obtained to test the hypotheses at both levels. Both primary and secondary sources were used.; The study contributes to the resource-based view by creating a model of the knowledge creation process that accounts for both individual and organizational competencies. In creating such a model, this study attempts to identify and measure resources that influence the process. Examining these resources should provide a better understanding of their impact on knowledge creation activities.
