SPITFIRE: Spin physics with an internal target for international research (Polarized target).

This dissertation reviews the results obtained from the internal target program at the Dutch National Institute for Nuclear and High Energy Physics (NIKHEF) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. New simulation and construction techniques for aerogel Cherenkov detectors are presented along with the results from the operation of the BigBite Cherenkov detector. Results from the NIKHEF 3He experiment, the first electron scattering measurement with a polarized 3He target and a recoil detector, are presented. The asymmetry results from the inclusive reaction channel are presented. These results provide the first measurement of the inclusive asymmetry in the delta resonance region. Cross section and asymmetry results from elastic scattering using a recoil particle detector are shown and compared with previous results obtained using Rosenbluth separation. Also presented is the first measurement of the kinetic longitudinal polarization of an electron beam.
