A pedagogical edition and performer's guide to J. S. Bach's cello suites (BWV 1007--1010) transcribed for the violin.

The technically and musically demanding Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by J. S. Bach (BWV 1001--1006) are among the principal repertoire for violin students. Joseph Szigeti suggested that young violinists should play violin transcriptions of Bach's cello Suites (BWV 1007--1012) before attempting the Sonatas and Partitas. Studying the Bach cello Suites provides a solid technical and musical foundation for violinists that applies directly to the Sonatas and Partitas, as well as to other repertoire.;The new edition of the Suites transcribed for the violin introduced in this treatise includes only the first four of Bach's cello Suites (BWV 1007--1010). Because the fifth suite was written for scordatura cello tuning and the sixth suite was written for a 5-stringed instrument, neither of them transcribes idiomatically for the violin.;The Performers Guide presents the historical background to the unaccompanied Bach string pieces, explores the challenges and procedures in preparing this new violin edition, introduces ideas for interpretation from performance practice and music theory research, and includes an extensive bibliography for further reference.
