摘要

Although the importance and impact of Spanish American Modernismo is evidenced by its extensive critical bibliography, studies on the modernista short story are scarce. More particularly, there is a lack of critical works on this genre that examine love and eroticism. It is clear, however, that the modernista short story shows an innovative and sophisticated treatment of love and the erotic, to such an extent that it can be considered a forerunner of contemporary approaches to these subjects. This study analyzes love and eroticism in the short stories of three prominent modernistas: Julian del Casal, Manuel Gutierrez Najera, and Ruben Dario.; In the modernista short story the spiritual and the sensual coalesce, reflecting classical, Biblical, and esoteric influences, among others. At the same time, the modernista aesthetics of language, which often transcends immediate functionality and leans rather towards the exquisite, is apparent in an appreciation of the human figure. By connecting writing with other arts, the modernistas stress the aesthetic aspects of the body that lend substance to its form, making it simultaneously more sensual and artistically sound. In addition, the skillful treatment of nature and its elements serves to strengthen the manifestation of Eros in the modernista short story.; This study is divided into three chapters. The first, on Casal's short stories, examines love and eroticism in reference to the author's aesthetic vision. It also studies the concepts of artificiality, personal sacrifice and death as they relate to Eros. The second chapter, on Gutierrez Najera's short stories, centers on love and personal relationships within a more social context. Given their prominence, adultery and unfaithfulness are considered in detail here. The final chapter analyzes the manifestation of nature and spring in the short stories of Ruben Dario. In Dario, nature plays a significant role in the expression and configuration of Eros at both the personal and the cosmological level. Finally, the influence of classical literature and art in the modernista short stories is highlighted in this last chapter.
