Planning and urban design strategies for addressing stationary noise-related problems.

This thesis explores the problems caused by stationary sources of noise in the urban setting and the approaches currently used to deal with this problem. Following this examination, the thesis focuses on developing practical approaches for municipalities to better address the problem.; The research examines three cases where noise generated by different types of stationary sources have resulted in conflicts within Halifax Regional Municipality. The cases are representative of the kinds of stationary noise problems which can occur in the three basic types of urban environments: commercial, mixed commercial/residential and residential environments.; The cases reveal that there are a number problems associated with the approaches that the various stake holders have taken to deal with stationary noise. The thesis provides a variety of approaches that municipalities could utilize to address these noise problems, ranging from land use planning controls, urban design considerations, site planning techniques to the redesign of the offending noise source.
