Now that OC-192 communications systems are commercially available and higher bit rate systems are in development, prudent telecommunications network administrators are testing their installed fibre to determine if it can be successfully used at 10 Gb/s and higher. NBTel and the fibre optics group at UNB have characterized various installed fibres throughout the NBTel network for their losses at wavelengths of 1244, 1310, 1550 and 1625 nm, as well as for strain and polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Weather, age, place of installation and cable type have also been considered.;Measurements were made using UNB's Brillouin sensor towards quantifying the limitations of the ANDO set. Laboratory measurements of a loose-tube cable showed that the natural Brillouin frequency for fibres in the same cable may deviate by as much as 29 MHz. Brillouin frequency temperature coefficients were found to deviate by as much as 0.0855 MHz/°C. The loose tube cable was placed outdoors for further measurements. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
